Reentry Permits for Green Card Holders:
A Green Card Holder may apply for a reentry permit when planning to travel abroad.
The purpose of this is to preserve the status of permanent resident when returning back to
The United States. Green Card holders leaving the United States for a long period of time
and without obtaining a reentry permit may risk losing their Green Cards.
An individual leaving the United States for certain period of time is required to apply
for and obtain a special travel document known as a reentry permit.
An individual may depart the United States as long the application form is submitted in
the United States and with the status of the document pending. But this can be a risk
because the application document may be denied and will be a problem when returning to the
country.
The individual may apply for a returning visa in this case, but there is no guaranteed.
